Will You Love Me?

Dear World,

I am messed up

alone-791420_1280You are right.  I am a hypocrite.  I have unfairly criticized you.  I speak the truth, but not in love.  I say things I shouldn’t say to you.  I’m not a good example to you.  I say one thing and then do something else.  I murder, cheat, enslave, lie, steal and hate.  God called me to love my neighbor and I failed.  You asked me to love you and I failed.

I realize the hurt that I have caused you.  I admit that I need to be more kind in the way that I treat you.  It is now my desire to love you unconditionally.  I have asked for God’s forgiveness for the way I have treated you.  Will you forgive me for not loving you as I have been called?

I have come to the realization that I am messed up.  I’m a wreck.  I have broken God’s law and am a rebel to his word.  I have asked God for his forgiveness, because I’m a sinner.  He has given me freedom from my sin through his grace.  And that’s why I talk to you about him.  You see, I want you to experience freedom from sin as well.  It’s not that I think I’m better than you.  I know I don’t have life all figured out.  I know that we are all sinful and we all need a savior.

“We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.” 1 Timothy 1:9-11

I am committed to living for God now

I need you to know that Jesus Christ is my savior and I want you to know him like I do.  And I want to love you as God has called me to.  So I will respect your freedom to choose, even if I do not always agree with your choices.  I will choose to love you even if I don’t feel like it.

Because of my understanding of what unconditional love is, I am unwilling to agree with you unconditionally.  There is a big difference between love and agreement.  I can’t agree with you, if agreeing with you contradicts the word of God.  God calls me to agree with him, not you (Acts 5:29).  I can accept you without accepting your behavior.  I don’t mean to hurt your feelings, but you need to understand that God’s love means everything to me.  I do not wish to hinder my relationship with him, above all else.

Even though I won’t always get it right, I don’t want to compromise God’s truth.  I don’t want to keep his truth to myself.  You can choose to ignore God if you want to, but that will not stop me from sharing his love with you.  It wouldn’t be loving for me to hide the source of my love from you.

I am forgiven

The truth is, we have all fallen short (Romans 3:23).  We are all messed up.  I don’t mean to single out your sin, as though it is worse than mine.  It’s not!  The point is that you are a sinner like me and you need Jesus just like I do.  That’s why I am unwilling to be silent about your sin.  And I want you to point out my sin, so I can draw near to the one who is perfect.

I have been forgiven by God.  I hope the same for you.  Will you ask for forgiveness for your sins and repent of them, or will you keep living without a relationship with Christ?

You are free to disagree with my lifestyle.  You are free to disagree with my understanding of God’s word.  Although, I hope you will love me even when I don’t agree with you.  I hope you will respect my freedom to choose.  Most importantly, I hope that you will pursue a relationship with God and ask for his forgiveness, so that you can truly understand what unconditional love is.

Love,

Follower of Christ
